working in academia is (as the term “working” implies) a job, which promises a particular level of material security in exchange for a willingness to enforce particular social inequalities, much the same as how a minimum wage retail job promises an hourly wage in exchange for the worker’s willingness to keep homeless people out of the shop and drug users out of the toilets. once academics get their head around this and stop seeing their work as an ennobled cerebral practice eliding the very materialist discourse by which it is made possible then maybe we can get somewhere

Ruby Keeler & Lee Dixon dance on a giant typewriter in Ready, Willing & Able (1937)

So jaded by cgi that I didn’t think this was impressive at all until I realised it was all an actual size set

It took me a solid few seconds to realize those type bars swinging back and forth at the top are actually peoples legs

    Library poll today!

What resources, other than books, do you use from your local/school library?

    Databases

Household and Creative Items (kitchen items, instruments, etc.)

    Video games

    Movies & TV shows

    Music CDs

Music Scores (a little less common)

    Hotspots

    Computers & laptops

Programs (classes, book clubs, story times, etc.)

Something else? (say in the tags if you want!)

    I only borrow books

My library doesn’t have any of these options

I was reluctant to put the last option, as most libraries come with a lot of these things (not all, but some), but I’m not sure! Libraries are not evenly funded across the U.S. (and unsure what it’s like outside of the U.S.). So yeah! I’d love to see everyone’s answers! Does your library have these options? Did you know that these were possible options that you could look into for your own?

When shows send us screeners ahead of the episode airing, they often come with DNRs (aka “do not reveal” notes telling us what spoiler plot points we can’t reveal in coverage).
